Field Trip
So happy! We can go out and have some social life back on track again.
The Art + Design & Craft Club group reunited on June 24th to go to the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) in Washington, DC.
We explored “in loco” a bit of American contemporary art, after our studies with Ana Tallone last month.
We were amazed when we discovered that horse sculpture was made in metal!
Is it really bronze?!
Isabel Futch shared with us this video where the artist Deborah Butterfield talks about her work.
- How does the horse look like made by wood?
Because it was originally made with pieces of wood, indeed! This is a process very commonly used in metalsmithing by jewelers and sculptors, called “casting”.
You can cast anything you want and use its mold to fill in with any material you wish. In this case the artist chose to filled it up with bronze.

We had a great surprise with one of the current exhibitions, “Printing the Revolution - The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now”.
Look how rich and bold are these printings!
At some point, we stopped in front of this big installation, which is a “supposed” healing machine. It was created and maintained for 3 decades, by its inventor.
Is it art? Is it an hallucination?
Is geniality too close to craziness? Where is the limit of reasonable thoughts?
